- Notes: Sean Fleming will present an organ recital on the historic four-manual Casavant pipe organ at the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul in Lewiston on Wednesday, August 9, 2017 at 12:15 p.m. Mr. Fleming will perform the Organ Symphony No. 1 by Alexandre Guilmant. Admission will be free. For more information, please call (207) 380-2769 or email sean68@email.com. Installed in 1938, the Casavant organ at the basilica is the largest church organ in Maine, and second in size to only the Kotzschmar organ at Merrill Auditorium, Portland. The instrument has been played by many of the world’s leading organists; including the great French organist, Marcel Dupre, and Dr. Charles-Marie Courboin. Guilmant’s First Symphony will showcase the full capabilities of the Casavant, a superb instrument designed in the style of the Cavaillé-Coll organs for which Guilmant composed his organ symphonies. An organ recitalist who has performed throughout the United States, Sean Fleming studied organ and piano with Ray Cornils, John Doney, Michael Lindsey, and Gerald McGee. For the past twenty-three years he has served as organist at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Newcastle.
