SUMMARY:Sheepscot Chorus sings Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" on April 11 and 12 in Damariscotta
DESCRIPTION:Sheepscot Chorus invites you to their annual spring concert\, “Many Voices\, One Dream\,” on April 11 and 12\, both at 3:00 PM at Damariscotta Baptist Church. On the program will be Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms\,” as well as other works by American composers representing varied cultures and backgrounds. \n“Choral music reminds us that many distinct voices can harmonize\, creating a shared vision\,” says director Linda Blanchard. “As we celebrate our nation’s 250th year\, this program is an invitation to find the common chords that bind us and to sing for the world we hope to build together.” Nine-year-old soloist Mae McDermott\, harpist Melody Lindsay\, percussionist Quinn Gormley\, and organist Sean Fleming will join the chorus for this exciting event. As a special treat\, the winners of this year’s Sheepscot Chorus Student Music Awards will perform\, including Rose Campbell from Boothbay Region High School. \nIn early December 1963\, Leonard Bernstein received a letter from the Dean of the Cathedral of Chichester in England\, requesting a piece for the Cathedral’s 1965 music festival. The Dean wrote\, “Many of us would be very delighted if there was a hint of “West Side Story” about the music.” Bernstein composed his “Chichester Psalms” in Hebrew\, selecting psalms expressing a plea for peace. Written for chorus and treble soloist\, the work uses music that was written for the prologue of “West Side Story” but was dropped early on. Critic Howard Klein wrote that “Chichester Psalms” was “at once a lovely\, enchanting work and a noisy\, exciting one.” \nThe “Many Voices\, One Dream” event will include a stirring arrangement of “America the Beautiful\,” “Wanting Memories” by long-time Sweet Honey in the Rock member Ysaye Barnwell\, and an arrangement of the Georgia Sea Islands spiritual “Yonder Come Day.” The program closes with a rousing arrangement of the multiple award-winning song by Carly Simon “Let the River Run\,” a joyful clarion call for hope and transformation. \nGo to https://sheepscotvalleychorus.org/tickets to buy tickets. Tickets are $20 (free for children and students) and are also available at Sherman’s Book Store in Damariscotta and at the door. For more information\, please email info@sheepscotvalleychorus.org\, or visit facebook.com/sheepscotchorus and sheepscotvalleychorus.org.

SUMMARY:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir Performs 30th Anniversary Concerts\, “There Is Sweet Music Here\,” on May 2 and 3 in Damariscotta
DESCRIPTION:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir presents “There Is Sweet Music Here\,” a concert celebrating 30 years of musicmaking\, with concerts on Saturday\, May 2 and Sunday\, May 3\, both at 3:00 p.m. at Damariscotta Baptist Church. The concerts include works by Gwyneth Walker\, Ola Gjeilo\, Herbert Howells\, Richard Francis\, Thomas Tallis and more. A professional string quartet and guitarist will join the Choir. Linda Blanchard is St. Cecilia’s artistic director\, assisted by Sean Fleming on organ and piano. \nThe core of the program features two odes to the Choir’s namesake. Opening the program is “A Hymn for St. Cecilia\,” a setting by Herbert Howells of a text by Ursula Vaughan Williams. This masterpiece of the English cathedral style was first performed at Evensong at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London on St. Cecilia’s Day in 1961. \nThe second setting is Richard Francis’ stirring “Hymn to St. Cecilia\,” based W. H. Auden’s poem of the same name. Francis captured the vivid changes in mood of Auden’s poem; in turns playful\, mystical\, and majestic. Composed in 1996\, this piece was Francis’s first commission for the Choir. \nAlso on the concert is a beautiful setting of Tennyson’s poem “There Is Sweet Music Here” by Z. Randall Stroope\, and works setting the poetry of Yeats\, 19th century Pulitzer Prize winning poet Leonora Spyer\, and influential 20th century poet May Swenson. Gjeilo’s “The Lake Isle” for guitar and string quartet\, featuring guitarist Dave Martin\, Gwyneth Walker’s “I Will Be Earth\,” a Magnificat setting by Stanford\, Frank Ticheli’s “Earth Song\,” and more. \nThe concerts will close with Caldwell and Ivory’s exciting tour de force “John the Revelator.” \nTickets are $20\, with free admission for children and students. Tickets are available online at ceciliachoir.org\, Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta\, and the door. For more information\, please email info@ceciliachoir.org\, visit facebook.com/stceciliachamberchoir and ceciliachoir.org\, or call 207-563-6160.
