SUMMARY:Sheepscot Chorus sings Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" on April 11 and 12 in Damariscotta
DESCRIPTION:Sheepscot Chorus invites you to their annual spring concert\, “Many Voices\, One Dream\,” on April 11 and 12\, both at 3:00 PM at Damariscotta Baptist Church. On the program will be Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms\,” as well as other works by American composers representing varied cultures and backgrounds. \n“Choral music reminds us that many distinct voices can harmonize\, creating a shared vision\,” says director Linda Blanchard. “As we celebrate our nation’s 250th year\, this program is an invitation to find the common chords that bind us and to sing for the world we hope to build together.” Nine-year-old soloist Mae McDermott\, harpist Melody Lindsay\, percussionist Quinn Gormley\, and organist Sean Fleming will join the chorus for this exciting event. As a special treat\, the winners of this year’s Sheepscot Chorus Student Music Awards will perform\, including Rose Campbell from Boothbay Region High School. \nIn early December 1963\, Leonard Bernstein received a letter from the Dean of the Cathedral of Chichester in England\, requesting a piece for the Cathedral’s 1965 music festival. The Dean wrote\, “Many of us would be very delighted if there was a hint of “West Side Story” about the music.” Bernstein composed his “Chichester Psalms” in Hebrew\, selecting psalms expressing a plea for peace. Written for chorus and treble soloist\, the work uses music that was written for the prologue of “West Side Story” but was dropped early on. Critic Howard Klein wrote that “Chichester Psalms” was “at once a lovely\, enchanting work and a noisy\, exciting one.” \nThe “Many Voices\, One Dream” event will include a stirring arrangement of “America the Beautiful\,” “Wanting Memories” by long-time Sweet Honey in the Rock member Ysaye Barnwell\, and an arrangement of the Georgia Sea Islands spiritual “Yonder Come Day.” The program closes with a rousing arrangement of the multiple award-winning song by Carly Simon “Let the River Run\,” a joyful clarion call for hope and transformation. \nGo to https://sheepscotvalleychorus.org/tickets to buy tickets. Tickets are $20 (free for children and students) and are also available at Sherman’s Book Store in Damariscotta and at the door. For more information\, please email info@sheepscotvalleychorus.org\, or visit facebook.com/sheepscotchorus and sheepscotvalleychorus.org.

SUMMARY:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir Performs 30th Anniversary Concerts\, “There Is Sweet Music Here\,” on May 2 and 3 in Damariscotta
DESCRIPTION:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir presents “There Is Sweet Music Here\,” a concert celebrating 30 years of musicmaking\, with concerts on Saturday\, May 2 and Sunday\, May 3\, both at 3:00 p.m. at Damariscotta Baptist Church. The concerts include works by Gwyneth Walker\, Ola Gjeilo\, Herbert Howells\, Richard Francis\, Thomas Tallis and more. A professional string quartet and guitarist will join the Choir. Linda Blanchard is St. Cecilia’s artistic director\, assisted by Sean Fleming on organ and piano. \nThe core of the program features two odes to the Choir’s namesake. Opening the program is “A Hymn for St. Cecilia\,” a setting by Herbert Howells of a text by Ursula Vaughan Williams. This masterpiece of the English cathedral style was first performed at Evensong at St. Paul’s Cathedral in London on St. Cecilia’s Day in 1961. \nThe second setting is Richard Francis’ stirring “Hymn to St. Cecilia\,” based W. H. Auden’s poem of the same name. Francis captured the vivid changes in mood of Auden’s poem; in turns playful\, mystical\, and majestic. Composed in 1996\, this piece was Francis’s first commission for the Choir. \nAlso on the concert is a beautiful setting of Tennyson’s poem “There Is Sweet Music Here” by Z. Randall Stroope\, and works setting the poetry of Yeats\, 19th century Pulitzer Prize winning poet Leonora Spyer\, and influential 20th century poet May Swenson. Gjeilo’s “The Lake Isle” for guitar and string quartet\, featuring guitarist Dave Martin\, Gwyneth Walker’s “I Will Be Earth\,” a Magnificat setting by Stanford\, Frank Ticheli’s “Earth Song\,” and more. \nThe concerts will close with Caldwell and Ivory’s exciting tour de force “John the Revelator.” \nTickets are $20\, with free admission for children and students. Tickets are available online at ceciliachoir.org\, Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta\, and the door. For more information\, please email info@ceciliachoir.org\, visit facebook.com/stceciliachamberchoir and ceciliachoir.org\, or call 207-563-6160.

SUMMARY:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir holds auditions for their popular concerts "Lessons and Carols for the Christmas Season"
DESCRIPTION:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir is holding auditions for all voice parts as we begin preparing for our highly-acclaimed December 19 and 20 concerts of Lessons and Carols for the Christmas Season. Drawing inspiration from the world-famous King’s College Cambridge Service of Lessons and Carols\, our program blends carols both sacred and secular with seasonal readings\, accompanied by a professional string quartet and performed in the beautiful Bowdoin College Chapel and Damariscotta Baptist Church. Among the stellar selections this year will be Eric Whitacre’s ethereal setting of the Christmas poem Lux Aurumque\, and the 15th century Boar’s Head Carol. \nSt. Cecilia Chamber Choir is a fully-auditioned group of singers that includes talented youth and seasoned performers. The group performs the very finest challenging choral repertoire spanning the centuries from medieval to modern\, under the direction of the husband-and-wife team Linda Blanchard and Sean Fleming of Damariscotta. In the English choral tradition\, St. Cecilia sings with a straight tone\, enabling attention to fine-tuning rich harmonies. Much of the group’s repertoire is a cappella\, and it frequently is accompanied by a professional chamber orchestra. St. Cecilia presents two to three concerts per year\, typically in December and May. \nSingers wishing to audition should have good vocal control\, and sopranos and altos should be able to sing without vibrato. The ability to read music is preferred\, but those who cannot read may participate by spending extra time learning the music at home with the aid of provided practice materials. We strive for our audition process to be gentle\, welcoming\, and supportive. \nRehearsals are on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM\, starting on Sept. 9\, at St. Andrew’s Church at 11 Glidden Street in Newcastle. To schedule an audition\, call Linda Blanchard at 207-563-6160 or email audition@ceciliachoir.org. For more information about the Choir\, please visit facebook.com/stceciliachamberchoir and ceciliachoir.org.

SUMMARY:Join Sheepscot Chorus to sing Haydn's "St. Nicholas Mass" and other holiday favorites on December 5 and 6
DESCRIPTION:Sheepscot Chorus invites you to join us as we begin rehearsals on Tuesday\, Sept. 8 in Wiscasset for our Saturday and Sunday\, December 5 and 6 Boothbay Harbor holiday concerts\, featuring Joseph Haydn’s charming “St. Nicholas Mass\,” performed with orchestra\, and conducted by artistic director Linda Blanchard. \n“Missa Sancti Nicolai” was written for the Dec. 6 Feast of St. Nicholas nameday of Haydn’s patron\, Prince Nicolaus Esterházy\, and was one of the first vocal works that Haydn composed. The short mass setting has intimate\, cozy instrumentation and lilting melodies that call to mind Christmas and pastoral music. Haydn painted a picture of the shepherds in the fields with the warm and rustic sounds of folk instruments. \nHoliday pops favorites will round out the second half of the program. Co-director and accompanist Sean Fleming has a knack for bringing together top-notch musicians for our holiday pops orchestra\, sure to set toes tapping! \nRehearsals are lively\, challenging\, and rewarding. Chorus members range from newly-minted singers to seasoned performers. Singers are provided practice materials to use at home\, so singers can come to rehearsals feeling prepared and ready to go! \nThe Chorus rehearses on Tuesday nights\, starting with Tuesday\, Sept. 8 at 7:00 PM\, at the Congregational church in Wiscasset\, next to the Wiscasset District Court.
