SUMMARY:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir performs Britten\, Kodály\, and Hogan on May 17 and 18 in Damariscotta
DESCRIPTION:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir celebrates 30 years of fine choral music with its “Hope Conquers Fear” concerts on Saturday\, May 17 and Sunday\, May 18\, both at 3:00 p.m. at Damariscotta Baptist Church. The concert includes works by Benjamin Britten\, Zoltán Kodály\, Moses Hogan\, and more. Linda Blanchard is St. Cecilia’s artistic director\, assisted by Sean Fleming on organ. \nBritten’s “Rejoice in the Lamb” was composed in 1943\, and movingly sets the poem “Jubilate Agno\,” by the eighteenth-century poet Christopher Smart\, whose outspoken views saw him wrongly imprisoned in a mental asylum. Britten captures the poem’s eccentric yet deeply spiritual tone\, portraying everything from animals to letters of the alphabet as symbols of worship and praise. The Times praised the work\, saying that “the spirit of the curious\, vivid poem has been caught\,” and calling it “a work not to be placed in any of the usual categories\, but certainly beautiful.” \nKodály’s Missa Brevis was first composed in the early 1940s as an organ mass. According to some accounts\, during the siege of Budapest in the winter of 1944 and 1945\, Kodály and his wife were forced to seek refuge in the cellars of the Budapest Opera House. It was in one of the Opera House cloakrooms that the premiere took place on 11 February 1945\, performed by a choir made up of the Opera company’s soloists\, who were accompanied by a harmonium\, as well as by the distant sound of gunfire. \nThe concerts will close with Moses Hogan’s tour de force “Elijah Rock.” \nPre-concert talks will be given before each concert at 2:30. Choir members will talk about special aspects of “Rejoice in the Lamb” and the Kodály mass\, with featured presenter and Choir member John Ward. Ward has been professor and chair of the Kenyon College English department and has served as Dean of Centre College. \nTickets are $20\, with free admission for students and children. Tickets are available online at ceciliachoir.org\, at Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta\, and at the door. For more information\, please email info@ceciliachoir.org\, or visit facebook.com/stceciliachamberchoir and ceciliachoir.org.

SUMMARY:Sheepscot Chorus sings Bernstein's "Chichester Psalms" on April 11 and 12 in Damariscotta
DESCRIPTION:Sheepscot Chorus invites you to their annual spring concert\, “Many Voices\, One Dream\,” on April 11 and 12\, both at 3:00 PM at Damariscotta Baptist Church. On the program will be Leonard Bernstein’s “Chichester Psalms\,” as well as other works by American composers representing varied cultures and backgrounds. \n“Choral music reminds us that many distinct voices can harmonize\, creating a shared vision\,” says director Linda Blanchard. “As we celebrate our nation’s 250th year\, this program is an invitation to find the common chords that bind us and to sing for the world we hope to build together.” Nine-year-old soloist Mae McDermott\, harpist Melody Lindsay\, percussionist Quinn Gormley\, and organist Sean Fleming will join the chorus for this exciting event. As a special treat\, the winners of this year’s Sheepscot Chorus Student Music Awards will perform\, including Rose Campbell from Boothbay Region High School. \nIn early December 1963\, Leonard Bernstein received a letter from the Dean of the Cathedral of Chichester in England\, requesting a piece for the Cathedral’s 1965 music festival. The Dean wrote\, “Many of us would be very delighted if there was a hint of “West Side Story” about the music.” Bernstein composed his “Chichester Psalms” in Hebrew\, selecting psalms expressing a plea for peace. Written for chorus and treble soloist\, the work uses music that was written for the prologue of “West Side Story” but was dropped early on. Critic Howard Klein wrote that “Chichester Psalms” was “at once a lovely\, enchanting work and a noisy\, exciting one.” \nThe “Many Voices\, One Dream” event will include a stirring arrangement of “America the Beautiful\,” “Wanting Memories” by long-time Sweet Honey in the Rock member Ysaye Barnwell\, and an arrangement of the Georgia Sea Islands spiritual “Yonder Come Day.” The program closes with a rousing arrangement of the multiple award-winning song by Carly Simon “Let the River Run\,” a joyful clarion call for hope and transformation. \nGo to https://sheepscotvalleychorus.org/tickets to buy tickets. Tickets are $20 (free for children and students) and are also available at Sherman’s Book Store in Damariscotta and at the door.
