It was not performed until September 1939\, and found instant popularity. Vivaldi’s accessible Gloria has since been performed in thousands of performances worldwide. \nAs a special treat\, tenor soloist David Myers-Wakeman will sing The Skyliners hit “Since I Don’t Have You\,” arranged by accompanist Sean Fleming. DESCRIPTION:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir celebrates 30 years of fine choral music with its “Hope Conquers Fear” concerts on Saturday\, May 17 and Sunday\, May 18\, both at 3:00 p.m. at Damariscotta Baptist Church. The concert includes works by Benjamin Britten\, Zoltán Kodály\, Moses Hogan\, and more. Linda Blanchard is St. Cecilia’s artistic director\, assisted by Sean Fleming on organ. \nBritten’s “Rejoice in the Lamb” was composed in 1943\, and movingly sets the poem “Jubilate Agno\,” by the eighteenth-century poet Christopher Smart\, whose outspoken views saw him wrongly imprisoned in a mental asylum. Britten captures the poem’s eccentric yet deeply spiritual tone\, portraying everything from animals to letters of the alphabet as symbols of worship and praise. The Times praised the work\, saying that “the spirit of the curious\, vivid poem has been caught\,” and calling it “a work not to be placed in any of the usual categories\, but certainly beautiful.” \nKodály’s Missa Brevis was first composed in the early 1940s as an organ mass. According to some accounts\, during the siege of Budapest in the winter of 1944 and 1945\, Kodály and his wife were forced to seek refuge in the cellars of the Budapest Opera House. It was in one of the Opera House cloakrooms that the premiere took place on 11 February 1945\, performed by a choir made up of the Opera company’s soloists\, who were accompanied by a harmonium\, as well as by the distant sound of gunfire. \nThe concerts will close with Moses Hogan’s tour de force “Elijah Rock.” \nPre-concert talks will be given before each concert at 2:30. Choir members will talk about special aspects of “Rejoice in the Lamb” and the Kodály mass\, with featured presenter and Choir member John Ward. Ward has been professor and chair of the Kenyon College English department and has served as Dean of Centre College. \nTickets are $20\, with free admission for students and children. Linda Blanchard is St. Cecilia’s artistic director\, assisted by organist Sean Fleming. Advance tickets are strongly encouraged for these concerts. “You were as good as ever!” “The whole thing was just beautiful!” “I’m so glad we came!” are a few of the audience comments from last year’s concerts. \nA beautiful new setting of the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem “The Bethlehem Star” by former King’s Singers member Bob Chilcott will be featured. The John Rutter favorites “What Sweeter Music” and “There Is a Flower” will be performed\, as well as Richard Francis’ ever-popular “People\, Look East” based on Eleanor Farjeon’s Christmas poem. The Choir will sing a setting of the Thomas Hardy poem “The Oxen” by Richard Francis’ father Keith Francis. Also featured will be “This Day Christ Was Born” by the prolific Elizabethan composer William Byrd. A professional string quartet will accompany the group on select pieces. As a special treat\, Eric Whitacre’s “Glow\,” composed for the “World of Color – Winter Dreams” show which premiered at Disney California Adventure Park in California\, will be performed. \nWith audience sing-along caroling using several of David Willcocks’ arrangements\, this concert is sure to be a treat for the whole family. \nTickets are $20 for the Damariscotta Baptist Church concert and $25 for the Bowdoin Chapel concert. DESCRIPTION:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir will present its popular annual Lessons and Carols Christmas concerts on Saturday\, Dec. 7 at 3:00 p.m. at Damariscotta Baptist Church\, and Saturday\, Dec. 14 at 3:00 p.m. at Bowdoin College Chapel in Brunswick. Linda Blanchard is St. Cecilia’s artistic director\, assisted by organist Sean Fleming. Advance tickets are strongly encouraged for these concerts. “You were as good as ever!” “The whole thing was just beautiful!” “I’m so glad we came!” are a few of the audience comments from last year’s concerts. \nA beautiful new setting of the Gerard Manley Hopkins poem “The Bethlehem Star” by former King’s Singers member Bob Chilcott will be featured. The John Rutter favorites “What Sweeter Music” and “There Is a Flower” will be performed\, as well as Richard Francis’ ever-popular “People\, Look East” based on Eleanor Farjeon’s Christmas poem. The Choir will sing a setting of the Thomas Hardy poem “The Oxen” by Richard Francis’ father Keith Francis. Also featured will be “This Day Christ Was Born” by the prolific Elizabethan composer William Byrd. A professional string quartet will accompany the group on select pieces. As a special treat\, Eric Whitacre’s “Glow\,” composed for the “World of Color – Winter Dreams” show which premiered at Disney California Adventure Park in California\, will be performed. \nWith audience sing-along caroling using several of David Willcocks’ arrangements\, this concert is sure to be a treat for the whole family. \nTickets are $20 for the Damariscotta Baptist Church concert and $25 for the Bowdoin Chapel concert. SUMMARY:St. Cecilia Chamber Choir holds auditions
DESCRIPTION:  \nSt. Cecilia Chamber Choir is holding auditions for all voice parts as we begin preparing our December “Ceremony of Lessons and Carols” concert. Drawing inspiration from the world-famous King’s College Cambridge Service of Lessons and Carols\, our program blends carols both sacred and secular with seasonal readings\, accompanied by a professional string quartet and performed in the beautiful Bowdoin College Chapel and Damariscotta Baptist Church. \nSt. Cecilia Chamber Choir is a fully-auditioned group of singers that includes talented youth and seasoned performers. We perform the very finest challenging choral repertoire spanning the centuries from medieval to modern\, under the direction of husband-and-wife team Linda Blanchard and Sean Fleming of Damariscotta. In the English choral tradition\, we sing with a straight tone\, enabling attention to fine-tuning rich harmonies. Much of our repertoire is a cappella\, and we frequently are accompanied by a professional chamber orchestra. We present two to three concerts per year\, typically in December and May. \nWe’re a dedicated and friendly bunch\, eager to welcome new members\, and we especially encourage gifted students to audition. Rehearsals are high-energy and challenging. “We work hard\,” says Blanchard\, “but we keep the rehearsals upbeat and fun. We provide practice materials to use at home\, so singers can come to rehearsal feeling prepared and ready to go!” \nSingers wishing to audition should have good vocal control\, and sopranos and altos should be able to sing without vibrato. The ability to read music is preferred\, but those who cannot read may participate by spending extra time learning the music at home with the aid of provided practice materials. \nRehearsals are Wednesday evenings at 6:30 PM starting on Sept. 11\, at St. Andrew’s Church on Glidden Street in Newcastle.
